Six of the country's 20 highest-income counties are in Northern Virginia

With both the Department of Defense and the CIA headquartered in Virginia, it's easy to see that the federal government is a major employer in the state. And it's probably no coincidence that six of the country's 20 highest-income counties are in Northern Virginia, while these government organizations are also based in the north. Having a degree, though it doesn't promise you a job, will make you competitive with job seekers from across the country.

Virginia has the highest concentration of technology-sector workers in the country meaning if you're at all tech-savvy, Virginia could be a great place for a career. Some of the most profitable tech companies in the state are Computer Sciences Corp., SAIC, and Gannett Company Inc. An interest in computers and how things work combined with a degree in a computer- or business-related field from any traditional or online colleges in Virginia will give you the necessary training and skills to start a career in the tech sector.

With so many schools in the state, Virginia has plenty of options for online education. For public Virginia online colleges and universities, you could go with George Mason University's programs. The school offers nursing degrees, an MBA, and a handful of master's degrees.

The University of Virginia offers both bachelor's and master's degrees online for busy students to earn a degree on their own time. Virginia Tech and Virginia State University both offer online courses to receive credit toward a degree. Many of the state's community colleges also allow you to take classes administered on the Internet.

In terms of private online colleges in Virginia, there are both for-profit and nonprofit institutions that can provide high-quality education to help you jumpstart your career. Hampton University, for example, offers programs at every degree level, including certificates, and Liberty University has more than 100 degree programs available online. For-profit schools you might consider include Everest College, Bryant & Stratton College, and South University, among others.
