College Costs

According to a 2012 report by the College Board, students in Texas saw a 27.3% increase in tuition costs between 2000 and 2010. The most recent report from Grapevine notes that state funding of higher education increased 8.4% between fiscal years 2009 and 2014. Public policy organization Demos reported in 2012 that higher education tuition and fees during the 2009-2010 school year amounted to 29% of the median household income in Texas, and they predicted that paying for college would become more difficult for many middle-class families in coming years.

College Enrollment

From 2000 to 2010, enrollment at Texas’s public colleges and universities increased 48.9%, nearly double the national average, despite increases in tuition. The Texas Higher Education Data found that enrollment at independent two-year colleges decreased overall between 2008 and 2012, though they experienced an increased enrollment between 2009 and 2011. According to a 2013 article on Inside Higher Education, Texas A&M announced an initiative called 25 by 25, an effort to increase enrollment of students in STEM programs to 25,000 by 2025.
