Minority College Scholarships

Minority scholarships are available to any student who is not a member of a majority race and gender; in the United States, this would be anyone who is not a white or Caucasian male. These scholarships are offered to African American, Asian, Native American, Hispanic, and interracial men, and to all women. The goal of all minority scholarships is to offer much needed scholarship money to students who have until now been almost completely left out of educational and professional opportunities because of their race or sex.

The pool for potential minority scholarship applicants is actually quite large considering that almost everyone in the United States can qualify for one minority scholarship or another. Even if a person's race or gender does not fit into the standard minority definition, there are some more non-traditional minority scholarships like a left-handed scholarship and a scholarship for those who are 4'10" tall or shorter. There are also several scholarships presented by associations who back gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students' rights as minorities.

Probably the most available scholarship monies are presented to women who fall into a minority race. Asian, Hispanic, Native American, African American, and interracial women have a lot of opportunities to get financial support from scholarship granting institutions like the American Association of University Women. or the largest minority group, African Americans and Hispanics, there are scholarship monies available from almost every college, university, and professional organization that offers scholarships. Native Americans have the opportunity to attend tribal schools and universities, while gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students benefit from monies offered by organizations like the American Anthropological Association.

Paying for school is not easy, but we are here to help. OEDb's student finance section will help you find the money you need to pay your tuition and other college expenses. We cover scholarships, college grants, and student loans. Scholarships and grants are both forms of "free money", meaning they don't need to be paid back. Scholarships are typically awarded by businesses or individuals, with the money being earmarked specifically for tuition. They can be awarded based on a student's location or by religious affiliation, such as Catholicism or Islam. Grants are typically awarded by governments or non-profit organizations and the money often can be applied to several different expenses a student may incur, not solely tuition. They can be awarded based on location or ethnicity, for instance African American or Hispanic. Loans are not considered "free money", because unlike scholarships and grants, they do need to be paid back after graduation. Common federal loans include Perkins and Stafford. Loans are also available by location.
