Those who volunteer and invest their time in the United States military are some of the most well respected citizens of the country, providing protection and service that keeps the country safe. As one of a number of rewards available to such individuals, there are a variety of military scholarships offered to military personnel to help cover the cost of attending college or another institute of higher learning.
Each branch is slightly different in its program offerings, but all have some sort of inclusion for assistance with educational tuition. All, however, have the Montgomery G.I. Bill to look to. There is also the ROTC Scholarship program for all members of the armed forces.
In the Army, you have options that include the US Army Health Professions Scholarship Program (providing scholarships for graduate studies in the medical field in exchange for service as an Army medic), the National Scholarship Awards Program DUSA Scholarship (for daughters and granddaughters of career Army officers in the amount of up to $1000), and the Larry Strickland Leadership Award and Scholarship (for a non-commissioned officer exhibiting leadership, consisting of a bronze eagle and $2000 toward fees, books, and expenses).
In the Navy, there are options such as the Fleet Reserve Association Scholarship (awarding $5000 annually to a member or the member's family member who meets eligibility requirements), the Agron Seal Scholarship of $1000 for up to four years (for students with a GPA of at least 3.2 who made contributions within the SEAL community), and the Naval Special Warfare Foundation Scholarships for dependents and spouses of individuals in active duty.
The Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, Reservists, and Veterans, as well as family members of any of the above, are also eligible for a number of scholarship programs within their own branch of service.
Paying for school is not easy, but we are here to help. OEDb's student finance section will help you find the money you need to pay your tuition and other college expenses. We cover scholarships, college grants, and student loans. Scholarships and grants are both forms of "free money", meaning they don't need to be paid back. Scholarships are typically awarded by businesses or individuals, with the money being earmarked specifically for tuition. They can be awarded based on a student's location or by religious affiliation, such as Catholicism or Islam. Grants are typically awarded by governments or non-profit organizations and the money often can be applied to several different expenses a student may incur, not solely tuition. They can be awarded based on location or ethnicity, for instance African American or Hispanic. Loans are not considered "free money", because unlike scholarships and grants, they do need to be paid back after graduation. Common federal loans include Perkins and Stafford. Loans are also available by location.
