Engineering College Scholarships

Engineering students tend to be awarded the most lucrative scholarships available. Typical awards are between $1000 and $5000, though some scholarships are considerably more. Certain granting institutions even offer several large prizes annually; there are many scholarships that have as many as 300 winners every year. Of course, the number of awards given and the amount awarded are dependent on the individual scholarship, so it is best if a student carefully reviews the scholarship requirements and details before applying.

As with most academic scholarships, there are college or university-based scholarships and national scholarships available for engineering students. To be eligible for engineering scholarships monies at a particular college, a student must be a prospective or current student of the university in question, and must want to complete his or her degree at that university.

National scholarships are available to any engineering student enrolled at an accredited engineering college. Some national scholarships are presented by organizations that are concerned with the furthering of racial and sexual diversity in the engineering field. These organizations will offer diversity engineering scholarships to minority races; some organizations also offer diversity scholarships to women.

Many students decide to enroll in engineering schools or become engineering majors because of the large amount of available jobs — and no wonder: in 2004 alone, there were over 1.4 million engineers holding jobs in a variety of specializations like civil, industrial, electrical, and mechanical. While the availability of engineering jobs depends on the area and specialization, the general thought is that the number of engineering jobs will rise over the next decade.

Paying for school is not easy, but we are here to help. OEDb's student finance section will help you find the money you need to pay your tuition and other college expenses. We cover scholarships, college grants, and student loans. Scholarships and grants are both forms of "free money", meaning they don't need to be paid back. Scholarships are typically awarded by businesses or individuals, with the money being earmarked specifically for tuition. They can be awarded based on a student's location or by religious affiliation, such as Catholicism or Islam. Grants are typically awarded by governments or non-profit organizations and the money often can be applied to several different expenses a student may incur, not solely tuition. They can be awarded based on location or ethnicity, for instance African American or Hispanic. Loans are not considered "free money", because unlike scholarships and grants, they do need to be paid back after graduation. Common federal loans include Perkins and Stafford. Loans are also available by location.
