Writing as a major, is a relatively new degree choice, less broad in scope than traditional English degrees, but more broad in scope than traditional journalism degrees.
Creative writing majors often specialize in certain fields, such as fiction, nonfiction, historical biographies, children or adolescent literature, poetry, song lyrics, or plays, business writing, advertising, editing, or copyrighting. Technical writing, writing for online publications and web sites, and ghost writing, are all possibilities for writing majors. Writers often have agents, and though it can be hard to break into the field, it can be lucrative and rewarding.
Editorial assistants earn $20,000-$35,000 annually. Copy editors earn from $25,000-35,000, reporters and writers earn from $20,000-125,000, section editors earn from $25,000-75,000, with senior, managing, and executive editors earning from $45,000-200,000 annually.
The types of writing you do often determine your income. Business writers, or writers who have specific areas of expertise in industry or technology, will often earn more than those who choose creative writing.
