College Costs

In recent years, New Mexico's in-state tuition rates for both four-year public and private universities has risen slower than the national average; between 2008 and 2011, tuition at four-year public schools rose 20.7% in New Mexico, compared to 25.1% across the country. In-state tuition at public two-year schools is rising a bit more quickly than the national average, but New Mexico also has some of the lowest overall costs for 2-year schools of any state in the nation. However, with cuts to the state education budget in the last couple years, as well as a proposal by state legislators to make wide tax cuts across New Mexico, tuition may begin to rise more quickly.

College Enrollment

Enrollment in New Mexico's institutions of higher education has fluctuated in recent years, with many more students choosing to enroll in two-year public schools than four-year programs. Nationally, numbers at the latter rose 15.9% between 2005 and 2010; in New Mexico, numbers only rose 12.4%. However, over the same time period, enrollment in two-year schools in the state rose 35.6%, which is more than double the national percentage. New Mexico cut per-student spending by the highest dollar amount of any state in the last five years; the state spends $4,775 less on each student now than it did in 2008, which reduced enrollment at four-year schools.

Higher Education Initiatives

  1. Official State Links

  2. College Savings

    • The Education Plan: This state 529 college savings program has a range of investment options, all of which allow families to put away money early for a child's college education later. Enrollees enjoy tax benefits and can choose between Age Based and Custom Choice portfolios.
    • Scholar's Edge: Another state 529 plan, this is run by the same organization as The Education Plan: Oppenheimer Funds. However, Scholar's Edge is a somewhat simplified version of the 529 plan and is meant for students and families who want to set up a savings plan quickly and easily as part of a larger college saving strategy.
  3. Education Nonprofits

    • GEAR UP New Mexico: The state branch of this national organization works with 25 public middle and high schools around New Mexico in order to help students start thinking about and planning for college. The organization's goals are to increase students' and families' understanding of higher education, to increase the number of students able to attend postsecondary institutions, and to prepare students to succeed after high school.
    • Native American Student Advocacy Institute: This nonprofit, affiliated with the College Board, aims to support indigenous and Native American students in their path toward college. They host workshops and seminars and help students navigate the terrain between their tribal connections and life at a postsecondary institution.
  4. Higher Education News

    • New Mexico Department of Higher Education Events and News: While not a traditional news site, the New Mexico agency in charge of higher education maintains a list of events and information related to the state's colleges and universities.
    • Education Week New Mexico: A nationally recognized publication, EdWeek filters its news by state, allowing readers to focus on trends and articles related to higher education in New Mexico.
