College Costs

While tuition rates haven't risen significantly more in Michigan than in other states in recent years, Michigan tuition remains pricy. For out-of-state students, Michigan has one of the highest average tuitions in the nation for public four-year schools, coming in at $31,463 for the 2013-2014 school year. In a five-year span (from 2006 to 2011), in-state costs at four-year public schools rose by 41.2%, compared to a rise of 42% across the country. At private four-year schools, on the other hand, costs rose 21.6%, compared to the national average of 27.8%. Costs at public two-year institutions rose 28.3% compared to the nation's 30.8%.

College Enrollment

Enrollment numbers in Michigan have decreased over the last decade and are continuing to decrease today. In contrast to the national increase of 15.9% in enrollment at public four-year institutions between 2005 and 2010, Michigan's enrollment went up a mere 4%. Analysts in Michigan blame this partly on decreased high school enrollment, since colleges across the state ― both two- and four-year schools ― are seeing low numbers. All of Michigan's MAC schools saw a decreased enrollment in 2011; some schools, like Central Michigan University, are stepping up their STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs in an effort to attract more students.

  2. College Savings

    • Michigan Education Savings Program: The state's 529 savings plan offers students and families nine different options for investing their money early. All 529 plans offer some tax benefits and the chance to plan for college costs far ahead of time.
    • Michigan Education Trust: The state's MET program allows students and families to save by paying for college tuition at today's prices. Enrollees can pay for part or all of college tuition years ahead of when they will attend, essentially "locking in" today's tuition rates in order to avoid price hikes and inflation.
    • Michigan Student Aid Resources: This state site includes multiple resources to help students find ways to save and pay for college. It includes the "Affording College Guidebook."
  3. Education Nonprofits

    • The Kalamazoo Promise: Entirely funded by anonymous donors, this nonprofit is helping public high school grads in Michigan attend four-year public college and universities. Students can apply for a full-tuition scholarship; the organization has already funded thousands of students' passage to higher education.
    • The Kresge Foundation: This nonprofit, headquartered in Detroit, works both in Michigan and on a national scale to expand opportunities for low income students and families. They invest in educational, artistic, and community-based initiatives.
    • Michigan AmeriCorps VISTA: This nonprofit works to fight poverty in Michigan and to provide educational opportunities and engagement for K-12 students who may be in poverty. Through college counseling, tutoring, financial literacy activities and other means, the organization tries to support impoverished students in the journey toward higher education.
