Online Colleges in Vermont

The Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative is a program that works with primary and secondary public schools to provide online learning opportunities for students. The Learning Network of Vermont also provides distance learning, in the form of video-based courses, many of which aren't offered in a traditional classroom setting. Currently, there are over 18 colleges in the state offering some form of distance learning, including the University of Vermont, which offers online, hybrid and blended programs. Vermont Law School also offers entirely online distance-based master's and LLM degrees, and online courses for degree completion programs. It was also the first institution in the nation to offer an environmental law degree completely online.

Tuition costs have steadily increased in recent years, although two-year public schools have increased at a slower pace than many other states. Over the past five years, public two-year schools in Vermont have experienced a 9% tuition inflation, compared to the 18% national average for inflation. Between 2004 and 2014, public four-year schools experienced a 30.5% increase in tuition. The spike in tuition costs is partially due to the 13.9% decrease in state funding for higher education between 2008 and 2014. Despite rising tuition expenses, enrollment has continued to increase in Vermont. Between 2002 and 2012, enrollment increased 27% at public schools, compared to the 19% national increased average. Vermont four year public schools have the highest graduation rate in the nation at 75.8%, and an 85.3% first-year students' retention rate.
