Overview of Online Colleges in Indiana

The number of online degree programs offered by Indiana's public and private colleges and universities is on the rise. The state legislature as well as the schools themselves have also partnered to make these degree programs more attractive and accessible to state residents. The Reaching Higher, Achieving More initiative is dedicated to meeting a single goal: increase the annual number of degrees conferred to state residents so that by 2025 60% of working-aged Hoosiers hold a post-secondary degree.

At last count in 2012, the percentage of Indiana's adults between the ages of 25-60 that held a degree was 34.9%, a full five percentage points below the national average. Also in 2012, Indiana ranked among the lowest in the country for both educational achievement and income per capita at 42 and 41, respectively. To its credit, the state has made every effort to increase access to higher education by keeping state tuition rates below national averages. Between 2006 and 2012, Indiana increased funding for higher education by 6.4%. In 2014, Indiana was one of only ten U.S. states to increase education appropriations by 10%.
