College Costs

College tuition has been on the rise in many states for many years. A 2012 report by the College Board noted that in Wisconsin, the cost of higher education rose 22% between 2006 and 2012, which put the state in the middle of the pack in terms of tuition increases. Inflation is a likely culprit for some of the double-digit increase, as is declining state support for higher education. From 2006 to 2012, Wisconsin’s government decreased support for higher education by 1.4%, which meant universities and colleges turned to tuition increases to make up the remainder.

College Enrollment

A 2012 report by the College Board noted that from 2000 to 2010, enrollment in Wisconsin’s higher education institutions increased 20.6%, although a 2012 article in the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal-Sentinel noted that enrollments in the University of Wisconsin system had begun to slip. In order to combat the decline, the article says they are trying to recruit graduate and international students more so than resident undergraduates.
