College Costs

In recent years, tuition at Tennessee colleges and universities has stayed slightly above the national average, with the in-state cost of public 4-year university increasing by 45% between 2006 and 2011 (compared to 42% nationally). That being said, next year may be a shock for students. The state Board of Regents voted in the spring of 2014 to approve tuition increases for both community colleges and the state university system. While the University of Tennessee is set to increase tuition by 4-6%, some community colleges will increase tuition by up to 10%. In addition, many 2-year and 4-year schools are increasing student fees, which aren't included in tuition numbers but can add $1000 or more to a year's bill. On the other hand, the state signed Tennessee Promise into law, allowing the majority of state high school graduates to attend community college for free.

College Enrollment

State enrollment trends between 2005 and 2010 stayed on par with national averages at 4-year public schools, with both hovering near 15%. On the other hand, over the same time period enrollment at 2-year schools in Tennessee rose 30.9%, compared to just a 16.7% increase nationally. Reasons for this include many people choosing to go back to school, as well as increasing costs at Tennessee's flagship public universities. In light of Tennessee Promise and dramatically shifting tuition prices in the state, enrollment numbers may fluctuate in the next couple years as students enroll in community colleges for free.

  2. College Savings

    • TN Stars: The state's 529 savings plan includes incentives for opening an account, 14 investment options, and low minimum contribution limits. There's one age-based option, as well. The program is run by the Tennessee Treasury Department.
  3. Education Nonprofits

    • Tennessee Promise: Just approved by the Tennessee government this year, Tennessee Promise is dedicated to providing a higher education for every student in the state. The organization is currently identifying community colleges with which it can partner; the premise is that every high school student that applies to the program and meets its requirements will be able to attend a community college for free.
    • Public Education Foundation Chattanooga: This national nonprofit has a state organization in Tennessee. It aims to support public education at all levels, but it also hosts college-specific workshops for students who face barriers in accessing higher education. PEF holds "Camp College" every summer, providing 40 rising seniors the opportunity to explore postsecondary education.
    • Tennessee College Access & Success: This nonprofit works with communities to create a culture of interest and participation in higher education. Its goal is to increase the number of Tennessee residents who finish college or university and earn a degree. They work with legislators, community leaders, and educators to expand awareness.
