Christian College Scholarships

Approximately 78.4% of Americans identify themselves as Christians, according to a 2007 survey from the Pew Research Center. Christianity is a vast and diverse religion in the U.S., encompassing the Catholic Church as well as the many Protestant denominations, such as Baptists, Lutherans, Episcopalians, and Methodists. Christianity also includes a wide array of non-denominational Christian churches, which are independent of the many established denominations. Being aware of the many branches of the Christian faith is important because for almost every Christian denomination, multiple scholarships exist for Christian students who need help paying for college.

Some Christian scholarships are general, and allow applicants of any branch of Christianity to apply for funds to support a higher education in any number of academic fields, while others are limited only to those who are members of a certain denomination. Some scholarships are limited only to students who will be attending seminary or a Christian college, while others will permit attendance at a secular college, provided the students seeks work in a field that promotes Christianity, such as Christian counseling, teaching at a Christian school, or Christian nonprofit work. Scholarships may also target women, minorities, and people in specific age brackets. Finally, many scholarships target the children of Christian pastors, church workers, or missionaries.

Another good way to find Christian scholarships is by searching the scholarship offerings at various Christian colleges, universities, Bible colleges, and seminaries. You may find one that fits your unique situation and even compels you to choose a certain university over another.

• Christian Missionary Scholarship Foundation — More than 100 scholarships in varying amounts provided annually to the children of Christian missionaries who attend one of six U.S. Christian colleges. Scholarships are renewable if students make satisfactory academic progress. Open to students pursuing any major or academic program.


• Diamonds in the Rough Ministry International Scholarships — This Christian ministry to women provides scholarships for female high school seniors from Texas who are enrolled in college who meet all other requirements.


• Faith & Education Scholarship Fund (TESM Scholarship) — $10,000 scholarships available to male and female students who are active members of the Church of Christ and who have been accepted into (or are currently attending) a four-year liberal arts institution.


• The Foundation for College Christian Leaders Scholarship — Scholarships to assist students who demonstrate Christian leadership; who live and attend college in Oregon, California, or Washington; and meet all other requirements. Special consideration is given to minority students.


• The Generosity Trust Dora Maclellan Brown Ministry Scholarship Program — Scholarships available for theologically conservative Christian men and women from the Chattanooga area who are pursuing a master's degree from an theological seminary or graduate school approved by the Generosity Trust. Preference given to those pursuing pulpit ministry.


• Young Christian Leaders Scholarship — Scholarships given in monthly awards of $1,000 to Christian high school seniors or full-time undergraduate students who are recognized for their Christian leadership and demonstrate financial need.
