Arkansas College Scholarships

As a state where there are few wealthy individuals, Arkansas represents an area where paying for college is nearly impossible for the majority of the population. While students are smart and strive to achieve academic excellence in hopes of meriting government grants and scholarships, there is typically a huge gap between the funding provided by the government and the actual amount owed for college. Arkansas scholarships are awarded by the state through a state-sanctioned organization to help fill these holes and meet the needs of all individuals who wish to pursue a degree.

The Arkansas Student Loan Authority has a contest for the R Preston Woodruff, Jr. Scholarship, which is awarded to residents of Arkansas for attendance at any school in the United States or a non-resident who wishes to attend an Arkansas school. The school of choice must be a 2- or 4-year college, university, technical school, or trade school. One top winner (with the most outstanding essay) will receive a scholarship that is renewable for up to 4 years, while 19 more recipients will receive a 1-year scholarship.

Because certain programs are unavailable within the state and officials feel it would be unfair to deny student the right to aid for such program, the Arkansas Health Education Grant Program offers grants and scholarships for individuals pursuing a graduate or professional program in dentistry, optometry, veterinary medicine, podiatric medicine, chiropractic medicine, or osteopathic medicine to attend a school outside the state. In order to qualify, the school of choice must be located outside the state, offer a full-time course in one of these fields, and grant a degree that fulfills part or all of the obligation to receive a professional license from the licensing board for the profession.

Paying for school is not easy, but we are here to help. OEDb's student finance section will help you find the money you need to pay your tuition and other college expenses. We cover scholarships, college grants, and student loans. Scholarships and grants are both forms of "free money", meaning they don't need to be paid back. Scholarships are typically awarded by businesses or individuals, with the money being earmarked specifically for tuition. They can be awarded based on a student's location or by religious affiliation, such as Catholicism or Islam. Grants are typically awarded by governments or non-profit organizations and the money often can be applied to several different expenses a student may incur, not solely tuition. They can be awarded based on location or ethnicity, for instance African American or Hispanic. Loans are not considered "free money", because unlike scholarships and grants, they do need to be paid back after graduation. Common federal loans include Perkins and Stafford. Loans are also available by location.
