Worcester Polytechnic Institute maintains a high standard in both its campus environment and online learning programs. It offers the same classes and instructors and has the same admissions requirements in both formats.

WPI is located in Massachusetts, but it also offers online education to distance learners. Its online programs award graduate certificates in environmental engineering and fire protection engineering as well as master's degrees in business administration for technology management and in science for environmental engineering and fire protection engineering.

Online students use streaming video, audio, message forums, chats and text. The courses are designed specifically for online adult learning while matching the requirements and outcome of their on-campus counterparts.

Classes start in September, January and May; semesters are 14 weeks long. Most courses are a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning but the majority of the work can be done at students' own pace. The synchronous studies do enhance the material and give students a chance to collaborate, but WPI realizes that the reason many people choose online learning is because they need flexibility and the ability to set their own schedules.

WPI, which is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, continually upgrades its courses to ensure they’re high tech, relevant and up to date.
