Winston-Salem State University is a public school in North Carolina. Historically an African-American college, WSSU was established in 1892 by Dr. Simon Green Atkins. In 1925, it became the first African-American college to offer a degree in elementary school education. Today, WSSU enjoys a diverse enrollment of students and is at the forefront of 21st century education.

WSSU, which is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, master's and doctorate degrees, also offers online programs. Using Blackboard technology, students can enjoy a live, classroom experience with professors and peers. This is convenient for working students and those who otherwise could not attend WSSU on campus. Degrees in interdisciplinary studies, clinical laboratory science and rehabilitation counseling are awarded in WSSU's distance program.

Financial aid is available to students in need. About 85 percent of all registered WSSU students receive financial assistance. Grants, loans and scholarships are available to qualifying students, either through the university or the federal government. Tuition for online courses may differ from campus ones.

WSSU is considered to be one of the premier universities of the southern United States. It helps the region by providing jobs and public education to nearby lower-income communities.
