Wake Forest University is a private college in Winston-Salem, N.C. The college was first founded in 1834, and like many early U.S. colleges, originally began as a seminary for aspiring clergymen. Since then, Wake Forest has played a significant role in American politics. Two presidential debates have been held at the college. The first was the debate between George H.W. Bush and Michael Dukakis in 1988; and the second came twelve years later, when the university hosted debates between Al Gore and George W. Bush.
Over the last 178 years, Wake Forest University has expanded into five liberal arts colleges: law, art and sciences, divinity, medicine, and business. Incoming undergraduate students can choose from 40 majors, including political science, sociology, computer science, and chemistry. Graduate-level applicants can choose from 25 programs, such as human services, physics, neuroscience, and biomedical engineering.
Wake Forest’s online offerings include several counseling and human services master’s degrees. These degree programs are accredited by The Council of Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. Students enrolled in these graduate programs receive training for the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification, a certification that can expand their career options after leaving school. Wake University’s online degree programs use interactive distance learning tools, such as Semester Online, to keep students connected with their instructors, the course material and one another.
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons participate in NCAA Division I sports competitions. They compete across collegiate-level sports like basketball, baseball, golf, soccer, and volleyball. Athletic summer camps help students to maintain training regimens before seasons begin.
Prospective students looking for financial aid can follow three steps to apply for scholastic funding. First, they should fill out a College Board profile; next, complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); and finally, submit a tax return to the Institutional Documentation Service. Applicants may also search for scholarships according to department, level of need, abilities, and merit.
Faculty members strive to create curricula oriented to service-filled lives. Students hoping to dedicate their spiritual, academic, and athletic abilities toward humanitarian goals may wish to explore Wake Forest University and become a part of the school’s 178 year history.
