First founded in 1888, the University of Scranton is a Catholic Jesuit school located in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. The university is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The continuing education and graduate colleges are accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
The online programs offered by the University of Scranton provide the same quality instruction as do the traditional on-campus programs. Over 85 percent of all instructors at Scranton hold either a doctoral or equivalent educational degree, and all have experience within their areas of instruction. Online class size is kept small to allow students and faculty to be able to communicate with each other frequently through e-mail, message boards, and chat rooms. Students are encouraged to network with other students in the program to discuss issues, complete projects, and increase their knowledge of subject areas.
The online learning environment allows students to access information whenever it is convenient for them, without having to take time out of work or from busy schedules to be at the computer or in class at a specific time. This technology also allows information to be reviewed as many times as needed rather than relying on pen and paper notes taken from lectures. Staff members maintain online office hours, which allows students to interact in real-time with professors regarding questions or areas of further discussion. Since students are able to access information at their own pace, many students complete graduate and undergraduate degrees much quicker than those students attending in person.
