The Art Institute Online was developed by The Art Institute of Pittsburgh as a way to encourage people who want to explore new career options or expand their knowledge of the arts. Online classes are convenient with the only requirement being that students complete as many as three assignments a week depending on the program in which they are enrolled.

Classes are taught through lectures, online learning materials and answering questions designed to encourage discussion. All instructors are trained using the principles of the Socrates Distance Learning Technologies Group. Instructors have completed 100 hours of training before they are allowed to teach. This means that students will be given expert instruction by seasoned professionals. The institute is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Higher Education.

Course work gradually builds in degree of difficulty so that students always feel challenged. Reading materials and visual aids help students understand the concepts and theories being taught through the lectures.
