Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) is a private, nonprofit university headquartered in the cities of Manchester and Hooksett. It was founded in 1932 as the New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Science, and subsequently underwent three more name changes (the current name was adopted in 2001). The school receives regional accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education.
In addition to the flagship campuses, SNHU has regional centers in Manchester, Nashua, Portsmouth, and Salem, N.H., and Brunswick, Maine. The school also boasts a distance learning program that received a “Best of Business” Online Degree Program Award from the New Hampshire Business Review in 2013. SNHU ranked 12th on Fast Company’s list of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies — the only university to make the cut.
The school is currently New England’s largest provider of web-based degrees. SNHU’s online programs are comprised of more than 160 undergraduate and graduate degrees, including 21 specialized MBA degrees and 27 specialized professional certificates. However, the school’s brick-and-mortar offerings are also substantial; more than 150 undergraduate and graduate degrees are available to campus learners. SNHU’s online degrees are divided into three academic schools: arts and sciences, education, and business. Students who major in business, creative writing, or criminal justice can participate in the three-year ‘Honors’ program, which integrates other related disciplines into the curriculum and allows students to earn their degrees one year ahead of schedule.
The application process for both undergraduates and graduate students is largely the same; however, graduate students must submit to a personal interview prior to acceptance into the program of their choice. Tuition for undergraduate degrees at SNHU is approximately $9,600 per academic year (or $320 per credit hour). The average tuition for a master’s degree is $23,750 per academic year; most master’s degrees require between 36 and 42 credit hours. SNHU offers tuition discounts of roughly 22% to veterans and active military servicemembers.
Innovative and popular in equal measure, Southern New Hampshire University is today recognized as a national leader in both traditional and online education. And thanks to its relatively low tuition costs, broad program selection, and other student perks, SNHU stands to remain a collegiate leader for years to come.
