Marylhurst University is a private, liberal arts university located just south of Lake Oswego, Ore. It was founded in 1893 by a group of 12 Catholic nuns known as the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary who made an oceanic voyage from Quebec to Portland. Their mission: to provide training for new teachers in downtown Portland. Founded as St. Mary’s Academy, the university changed its name after the sisters relocated to Marylhurst; it holds the distinction of oldest Catholic educational institution in Oregon.
