Glenn R. Jones, the founder of Jones International University, first developed Mind Extension University, a cable television network that allowed more than 30,000 students to complete college course via television. When the Internet began to rise, Jones saw the potential to education even more students, so in 1993, he created Jones International University, the first entirely online university, according to the school’s website.
In 1999, Jones International became the first entirely online accredited university when they gained accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission, a nationally recognized accrediting organization. Jones International University consists of the School of Education and the School of Business. The School of Education offers a certificate in education, master’s degree in education, and education specialist degree. The School of Business offers business administration certificates, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in a long list of business specializations, including accounting, negotiation and conflict management, finance, health care management, and more.
To help students decide which program is right for them, Jones International’s academic advising staff will work with each student to determine their career goals. Once enrolled, student support counselors will work with students to assess their academic goals and develop a unique degree plan for each student that will help them achieve their goals. They will help students choose their courses and become familiar with the university’s requirements, policies, procedures, how to interact with instructors, and how to access and complete assignments. These counselors will also work with students throughout their entire tenure at Jones, offering guidance and support when the student needs it.
The first course a student will take at Jones International is JIU 101 – Successful Online Learning. This is an introductory course that will teach students about the virtual classroom, resources and tools, and the online learning process, preparing them for the challenging courses to come.
