Fortis College was founded in August 2008 in Phoenix, Ariz. The second campus opened in Salt Lake City just one month later, and since then the school has rapidly expanded. Today, Fortis College boasts more than 40 campuses in 15 states, as well as an online program. Specific degree programs vary by campus, so prospective students should verify that their preferred course of study is available at the location of their choice.
Fortis is primarily focused on outcomes-based, career-oriented learning and training; most programs prepare students for careers in high-demand fields such as nursing, healthcare, medical, dental, information technology, business, cosmetology, massage, and skilled trades such as welding and HVAC. Fortis offers a wide range of professional training courses and certifications, as well as associate degrees and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Various locations also offer a wide variety of continuing education certificate programs, from Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to phlebotomy certification.
In addition to more than 40 physical campuses, Fortis College’s online directory is geared toward students who desire the flexibility of distance learning. With direct instructor feedback, 24/7 access to course materials, live chats, group forums, and instantly graded exams, the online program is easy to use and adaptable to individual learning styles. Fortis College’s online degree options are comprised of 13 associate degrees that fall under one of two categories: applied business and applied science. Applied business degrees include hospitality management, retail management, accounting, paralegal studies, and internet marketing. Applied science degrees include digital graphic design, criminal justice/homeland security, medical billing and coding, medical administrative assistance, and web development. Each program is specifically designed to prepare students for entry-level professional positions, while allowing them to learn at their own pace. Should students need career planning assistance upon completion of their program, they will have access to career services advisors, as well as professional databases and other resources.
Fortis College is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity College (SOC) Consortium, and is committed to helping military personnel and their families earn college degrees. Due to the highly mobile nature of military service, Fortis recommends online programs as an ideal format for military students. The school also loosens certain location and residency requirements for service members pursuing degrees on ‘brick-and-mortar’ campuses. For example, civilian students must complete at least 30% of their course work at a single Fortis campus, but for military students this requirement is reduced to 25%. The university also awards course credit for military training and experience and provides many tuition assistance options.
By providing flexible course schedules for all students and going the extra mile to help military service members earn academic degrees, Fortis College has managed to become a national leader in web-based higher education in just five years since its induction. And thanks to a wide range of degree and certificate programs — as well as dozens of campus locations — this institution is poised to remain a major collegiate contender in the years to come.
