Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is a public, master's level university located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Historically an African American college, WSSU was established in 1892 by Dr. Simon Green Atkins. In 1925, it became the first African American college to offer a degree in elementary school education. Today, WSSU enjoys a diverse enrollment of students and is at the forefront of 21st century education.

WSSU is one of most prestigious brick-and-mortar colleges that offers online degree programs. Using online Blackboard technology, students can enjoy a live, classroom experience with professors and fellow students. This is convenient to working students and those who otherwise could not attend WSSU on campus. Currently, a BS in interdisciplinary studies is offered, as well as BS in clinical laboratory science. Online graduate students can also earn an MS in rehabilitation counseling from WSSU's distance program.

Financial aid is available to students in need. In fact, 86% of all registered students take advantage of WSSU's generous financial aid department. Students can seek more information about financial aid through the college's official Web site. Grants, loans and scholarships are available to many qualifying students, either through the college itself or the federal government. Tuition for online courses may differ from campus courses, just as in-state distance learners will pay a different rate than out-of-state students.

WSSU is considered to be one of the premier universities of the southern United States. For over a century, the university has made history with its educational achievements. In addition to that, WSSU helps the local region by providing jobs and public education to surrounding, lower-income communities. Now, with a growing online program, WSSU is paving the way for a more versatile and convenient method of education.
