The Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) maintains a high standard that exists in both their campus environment and in their online learning programs. They offer the same classes, instructors and have the same admissions requirements regardless of whether you’re earning a degree or certification online or offline. This assures students that the quality of education they receive when choosing WPI for online distance education will help them further their careers and their lives.
WPI is located in New England, but it offers online distance education in many programs including graduate certificates in environmental engineering and fire protection engineering as well as Masters Degrees in business administration for technology management, in science for environmental engineering and in science for fire protection engineering.
Students achieve their academic goals through their computers with a combination of learning mediums including streaming video, audio, message forums, chats and text. The courses are designed specifically for online adult learning while matching the requirements and outcome of the in class campus training program.
Classes start several times per year in September, January, and May; semesters are 14 weeks long. You will participate with weekly assignments and collaborative teamwork with supportive feedback from qualified instructors. Most classes are a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning with the majority of the coursework being asynchronous, whereby students work on their own and at their own pace. The synchronous studies do enhance the material and give students a chance to collaborate, but WPI realizes that the reason many people choose online learning is due to the need for flexibility and self-paced learning due to busy lifestyles.
The learning management system, referred to as myWPI is a collaborative, rich environment where students are excelling and meeting or exceeding their academic goals. The online learning environment needs to be one in which students can excel at home, giving them the same quality of education as they would receive in a classroom. WPI believes the courses provided online provide this environment, and WPI continually upgrades their courses to ensure they’re high tech, relevant and up to date.
