Interior Design Online Degree Programs

Interior designers are concerned with interior aesthetics and style. Those enrolled in an interior design program must meet degree requirements and pass licensure exams for interior design certification in 23 states. Entry level positions, like commercial and residential design, space planning, computer-aided drafting, and showroom management, require a Bachelor of Science degree in interior design. Master's degrees focus more on research, history, environmental design, and society. A master's degree is usually required for design team management and provides training to run a design business.

Interior designers held about 65,000 jobs in 2004, and the market, while very competitive, continues to grow. Approximately 3 out of 10 designers were self-employed, 2 in 10 work in specialized fields of design, 1 in 10 worked in architecture and landscaping, while the rest worked in fields such in retail home furnishings, building material and supply dealers, residential and commercial construction companies, and many performed freelance work. Salaries range from $23,440 to $71,220, with a median income of $40,670 for interior designers.
