Careers in fashion design often begin as part of textile and apparel companies, but people often have long term goals of being self employed. Fashion designers research fashion and clothing trends, and design clothing for fashion shows, which occur quarterly, with the most important fashion shows occurring in the spring and fall.
Fashion design degrees are offered within most universities' Arts and Humanities departments. Designers typically are well trained in all facets of Art, including CAD (computer-aided design.) Fashion designers prepare design sketches by hand or computer, and then create patterns, and fashion garments from them. Most designers begin as assistants to experienced designers, and advance to higher paying positions, or become self-employed.
Salaries vary extremely widely in the fashion design field, with beginning assistants earning approximately $15,000 to designers who earn more than a million dollars annually. The median income for a fashion design degree holder is approximately $30,000 a year.
