College Costs

While college costs in Ohio are generally above the national average, tuition in the state is rising at a significantly slower clip than in many other states. Between 2006 and 2011, the cost of in-state tuition at a 2-year school rose only 16.3% in Ohio, compared to 30.8% nationally; in-state tuition at 4-year public schools rose just 9.8%, in comparison to 42% nationally. Tuition has risen slowly in the state in part because the Board of Regents implemented tuition caps for public schools in 2008; most schools now may only raise tuition by 3.5% annually.

College Enrollment

While enrollment in Ohio schools went up at a faster than average rate between 2000 and 2010, numbers have begun to drop in the past couple years. In the decade beginning in 2000, public institutions in the state saw enrollment numbers go up by 33.2%; nationally, enrollment in public institutions increased by 28.8%. However, Ohio enrollment dipped in 2012 and dropped again in 2013, decreasing by 6%. Reasons for this include the nationwide decrease in high school graduation rates as well as tightening requirements for financial aid, leaving some students unable to attend postsecondary institutions.
