College Costs

Tuition in North Carolina has risen quickly in recent years, especially at the state's 2-year public colleges and universities. While costs for 4-year in-state tuition at both public and private schools has stayed on par with increasing costs nationally since 2006, in-state tuition at 2-year institutions increased by 53.7% between 2008 and 2011. This is more than double the national increase of 24.9% over those three years. One reason this is the case is the reduced state education budget, which has not only pushed up the cost of tuition but forced many schools to cut faculty positions and on-campus resources.

College Enrollment

Despite the increasing cost of 2-year public institutions, enrollment at those schools has increased in recent years, while enrollment at North Carolina's 4-year schools has decreased. Part of the reason is that one of the state's flagship universities, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, cut 16,000 course seats and eliminated two distance education centers within the last five years. Other universities have had to make similar, though less drastic, cuts. However, enrollment at public 2-year schools increased 26.6% between 2005 and 2010, compared to a national increase of 16.7%. As in other states, North Carolina saw a surge of students looking for vocational and technical education during the recession.

They're also able to choose between a range of investment options, some of which have low minimum contributions for those in need.
  3. Education Nonprofits

    • College Foundation of North Carolina: This comprehensive nonprofit includes resources for students of all ages. It aims to help students and families plan, pay for, and attend college successfully, and it connects users to a number of online and in-person resources, including college preparatory materials, financial aid, and career planning tools.
    • Carolina College Advising Corps: This organization, based out of the University of North Carolina, connects low-income and potential first generation college students to advisors. Through mentoring and skill-building, the organization aims to increase the number of disadvantaged students who enter higher education.
  4. Higher Education News
