New Jersey is home to several major pharmaceutical firms, including Johnson and Johnson, Pfizer, Merck, and Bristol-Myers Squibb. In addition to the pharmaceutical industry, New Jersey's economy centers on the financial, chemical development, telecommunications (the state is home to Verizon Wireless, AT&T Communications and other telecommunications firms), food processing, electric equipment, and printing and publishing industries. Several New Jersey colleges and universities offer online programs for degrees related to many of these industries. The state also leads the way in renewable energy; over 10,000 solar power installations make it the second in the nation for solar installations.

New Jersey's Thomas Edison State College is one of the oldest accredited adult education schools in the country and one of the earliest to utilize technology for online distance learning. The college offers a variety of associate, bachelor's, and graduate degrees and certificates that can be completed entirely online. Brookdale Community College offers online courses toward degrees in business, humanities, and social sciences. Back in the late 1970s, the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) created and supported some of the very first distance-learning classes. NJIT continues to offer online master's programs and graduate certificates.

The for-profit Berkeley College has a location in Woodland Park and offers several associate's, bachelor's, and certificate programs entirely online. The private, non-profit Monmouth University offers online courses and certificates to graduate students. Rider University, another private, non-profit, offers several of its courses online and an online Business of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) degree. The University of Phoenix and Devry University have locations in New Jersey as well.
