College Costs

Kansans find themselves squarely in the middle when it comes to increases in the cost of higher education. The state saw an overall public tuition increase of 28% since 2008, a figure that falls right under the national average of 30%. Concerned that higher costs will drive prospective students away, schools are working to control student tuition burdens. State tuition averages can't quite capture their efforts and students are encouraged to compare the price tags of individual degree programs in the state before enrolling.

College Enrollment

College enrollment rates in Kansas are substantially lower than national averages, jumping a meager 16% over the last ten years. Community college enrollments in the state even dropped by 3.8% in the 2012-13 school year. But while statewide two and four year enrollment rates fell or did not improve dramatically this year, many rates at individual schools did see encouraging jumps in enrollment. For instance, the Wichita Area Technical College saw an increase in enrollment of over 25% percent for the 2012-13 school year.

    • Charles Schwab: Like Learning Quest, this 529 plan is administered by the treasurer but is managed by Charles Schwab. Accounts may be established with deposits of as little as $25.
