College Costs

The cost of a four-year degree at an Iowa private college or university is more than three times higher than at one of the state's public schools. Private colleges and universities in Iowa that have seen a drop in enrollment due to higher costs are now marketing themselves via a site entitled Thinking Independently. The organization points out that 98% of their students receive at least some financial aid to help offset rising costs. The Gazette Newspaper reports these institutions are actively marketing benefits of a private college or university, such as smaller class sizes and more tenured faculty.

College Enrollment

Trending slightly higher than the national average of 28.8%, Iowa's enrollment rate of 31.7% places it firmly in the center of the pack nationally. Recognizing the fact that higher education is a competitive business, the Iowa Senate voted to increase funding to the Board of Regents, which ensures tuition will remain flat for at least two years. The move was done in the hope that curbing costs will boost enrollment. Schools like the University of Iowa have have adopted social and traditional media to tout their post-graduation job placement success stories as a means of further boosting enrollment.
