College Costs

More than 40 years ago, Indiana codified their commitment to higher learning by creating the Indiana Commission on Higher Education. The commission works to define the mission of public colleges and universities and develop programs that encourage students to enroll in and complete degrees. The average cost of a college education has risen at a rate of 30% over the past five years nationally, while a college degree in Indiana has risen by only 22%. Education cost containment efforts in Indiana schools have allowed the state to remain competitive on a national level. The cost of a two-year or four-year degree from a public institution is close to the national average, while the cost of a four-year degree at a private university in Indiana is in the top 20% nationally.

College Enrollment

Enrollment at Indiana's colleges and universities has increased at nearly 41% over the past 10 years, thanks, in part, to programs such as the Equity Project at Indiana University. This program has looked at the way children are educated and sought to change the behavior of adults to better meet the needs of children. College completion rates still lag behind national averages, but efforts by both private and public higher education advocates are now yielding positive results. Graduation rates are climbing. The state's goal is to meet or exceed the national averages by 2021.
