Nursing College Grants

The healthcare industry is the fastest growing field in the United States, though qualified individuals to fill increasing job opportunities are in short supply, especially in the field of nursing. In order to help boost the number of students studying nursing in college, the government and several private sources have begun providing grants, scholarships, and other gift monies to fund the education of these needed healthcare professionals.

One source of several grants that target nursing is the US Department of Health and Human Services division of Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA). Other grants come from state sources or are available specifically for minorities or graduate studies. The HRSA offers Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (for nursing and other full-time healthcare professional studies), the Nursing Scholarship Program (providing over 200 grants that can cover the cost of tuition plus up to $1000 in monthly stipend), the Nursing Education Loan Repayment (for those agreeing to work in a high-need facility for at least 2 years), and the Indian Health Service Loan Repayment Program.

State funded grant opportunities abound through the American Nurses Association, with more than two-thirds of states offering specialized grant programs for nursing. In order to increase the number of nurses in general, as well as better represent all ethnicities in the industry, many nursing grants and scholarships are awarded specifically to minorities. For example, Arizona State University sponsors the American Indian Students United for Nursing organization.

Professional grant sources include the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the Emergency Nurses Foundation Assoication, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, and the Gerontological Society of America.

Paying for school is not easy, but we are here to help. OEDb's student finance section will help you find the money you need to pay your tuition and other college expenses. We cover scholarships, college grants, and student loans. Scholarships and grants are both forms of "free money", meaning they don't need to be paid back. Scholarships are typically awarded by businesses or individuals, with the money being earmarked specifically for tuition. They can be awarded based on a student's location or by religious affiliation, such as Catholicism or Islam. Grants are typically awarded by governments or non-profit organizations and the money often can be applied to several different expenses a student may incur, not solely tuition. They can be awarded based on location or ethnicity, for instance African American or Hispanic. Loans are not considered "free money", because unlike scholarships and grants, they do need to be paid back after graduation. Common federal loans include Perkins and Stafford. Loans are also available by location.
