Louisiana College Grants

Are you a student in Louisiana about to graduate high school and wondering how you are ever going to afford college? Perhaps you are an adult who desires the chance to return to school after many years but just can't see a way to work it into the budget. Like many other states, Louisiana offers grants for schooling beyond high school to help those in need obtain the education they deserve. Education is important to the state, and retaining intelligent individuals who will later work within the state makes funding their education in state worthwhile.

The Louisiana Office of Student Financial Aid is the administrator of state-funded scholarships and grants, which can be used toward any state-funded University of Louisiana campus or affiliated community or technical college, as well as Southern University campuses. The Tuition Opportunity Program for Students is one of the most widely used programs and offers four different awards based on student performance.

Each of these is awarded to a student who resides in state and pursues a program at a public or independent state college or university in amounts between $400 and $800. Another option is the LEAP (Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership), which provides between $200 and $2000 for financially disadvantaged students with a GPA of at least 2.0 enrolled in a state college or university program. Qualification is based on filling out the FAFSA.

Paying for school is not easy, but we are here to help. OEDb's student finance section will help you find the money you need to pay your tuition and other college expenses. We cover scholarships, college grants, and student loans. Scholarships and grants are both forms of "free money", meaning they don't need to be paid back. Scholarships are typically awarded by businesses or individuals, with the money being earmarked specifically for tuition. They can be awarded based on a student's location or by religious affiliation, such as Catholicism or Islam. Grants are typically awarded by governments or non-profit organizations and the money often can be applied to several different expenses a student may incur, not solely tuition. They can be awarded based on location or ethnicity, for instance African American or Hispanic. Loans are not considered "free money", because unlike scholarships and grants, they do need to be paid back after graduation. Common federal loans include Perkins and Stafford. Loans are also available by location.
