College Costs

While Georgia ranks in the middle of the pack (30th) with regards to the cost of post-secondary education, it has experienced the largest overall increase in cost over the past five years ― a hike of 58 percent. Nationally, 71 percent of college graduates carry an average of $49,000 in debt, while 59% of Georgia's students graduating with a bachelor's leave school with an average balance of $23,089. Georgia's trend of exceeding the national average in higher education costs is likely to continue. The state's population continues to swell and the need for qualified graduates is growing right along with it.

College Enrollment

Georgia's college enrollment numbers have been something of a roller coaster over the past few years, with record high enrollments reported in 2010, followed by precipitous declines in 2014. Among the reasons for the downturn between 2011 and 2013 is Georgia's slower than average recovery post-recession, coupled with a decrease in state funding for higher education initiatives.

Higher Education Initiatives

  1. Official State Links

  2. College Savings

    • Path 2 College 529 Plan: The state of Georgia sponsors and administers this traditional 529 tuition savings plan. Georgians are allowed to contribute up to $2,000 per year per student, regardless of income. Georgia taxpayers are not required to itemize in order to adjust their income to compensate for contributions.
  3. Education Nonprofits

    • Complete College Georgia: Part of the larger national Complete College America program, this state-specific plan seeks to improve enrollment to meet job market demand. It is estimated that 60% of new jobs will require a postsecondary degree. The program works by providing funding and resources for schools and educators aimed at increasing enrollment and academic success.
    • Project Grad Atlanta: As home to more than 500,000 of the Peach state residents Atlanta's academic success is a true reflection of the state's success. Project GRAD's primary goal is to increase the number of Atlanta's students who move on to college upon completion of high school.
