College Costs

Florida's college enrollment growth has slowed in the last five years, mirroring the decrease in the rate of population growth. On the other hand, the cost of a college education in Florida has only grown, outpacing the national average by 11%. Recent studies have deemed Florida's public colleges and universities too top heavy, emphasizing administration over instruction. This factor, in part, explains the disparity in cost, which appears to be supported by the relatively greater increase in the cost of a public education when compared to private school increases.

College Enrollment

Florida enrollment continues to outdistance national trends, with 65% of the state's high school students attending college. The Orlando Sentinel reports that, in addition to graduating high school seniors, Florida's colleges have experienced a marked increase in the number of adults returning to school to either start or complete a degree. The increases in enrollment are lead by female attendance. Where 59% of Florida's male high school grads are enrolling in college, 70% of women are enrolling, a weighty 11% hike.
