What a Network Administrator Does

Network administrators are responsible for building, maintaining, managing, and repairing an organization's computer networks. Networks are merely a means of setting up communications channels between interconnected groups of computers, allowing different users to share data and resources. These networks may be small and local or large and complex, spread out across numerous cities. Network administrators handle a company's Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs) and network segments, as well as manage the company's Internet and intranet systems, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. They must install and maintain hardware and software that supports an organization's networks, making sure everything is working the way it is supposed to be. Network administrators keep a sharp eye on network performance, taking steps to ensure user's needs are being met and repairing any problems that crop up. Network security is also a vital component of a network administrator's work, as they must establish a means of protecting the organization's networks from hackers and other threats.

How to Become a Network Administrator

In many cases, network administrators are required to have a bachelor's degree in a computer-related field. However, it's not unheard of for network administrators to hold an associate degree or professional certification with a specialization in network administration. After all, some employers look more closely at an applicant's skill level and experience in networking, network management and network security than specific credentials. Where a degree comes in handy is in equipping you with the knowledge and skills you need in the first place if networking does not come naturally to you. The most common degree programs for network administrators are computer science, information science and management information systems (MIS), according to the Bureau. Recent graduates often gain initial experience by working as lower-level computer support specialists before taking a position in network administration, the Bureau said. Because employers prefer to hire network administrators with experience under their belts, it is important to choose a degree program that connects students with internships and concludes with the awarding of key certifications in networking that demonstrate your competence.

Career Outlook for Network Administrators

Network administrators can expect excellent job prospects between 2008 and 2018. In fact, network administrators are projected to experience 23 percent job growth in that decade, which is much faster than growth projected in other occupations, according to the Bureau. Increased demand for network administrators will be spurred by today's businesses, corporations and firms continuing to invest in new technology, particularly mobile technology. Also, more organizations will be conducting business online. This, in turn, creates a need for network administrators to help businesses use technology to facilitate communication among employees, clients and customers. In addition, the rise of more sophisticated cyber attacks has created an ongoing need for network administrators skilled in network security to combat such attacks. The average annual salary for network and computer systems administrators was $66,310 as of May 2008, with the middle 50 percent earning between $51,690 and $84,110, the Bureau showed. The top five industries employing the most network administrators are management of companies and enterprises; computer systems design; wired telecommunication carriers; colleges, universities and technical schools; and elementary and secondary schools, according to the Bureau.
