These professionals serve as technology managers and decision makers within a corporation or on a consulting basis. They ensure that the information technology and telecommunications of the company work and run smoothly. They assist other managers and executives in assessing the short- and long-term goals of the company, and subsequently recommend and implement technological solutions for reaching those goals. They oversee such areas as software development, network security, and Internet operations. They also work with computer engineers, Web designers, support specialists, and other IT professionals to implement and upgrade computer hardware and software, create intranet sites, develop Internet sites, and manage the overall network system. These professionals should have strong leadership and managerial skills, be excellent communicators, and be able to quickly think critically and logically. They will be heavily relied upon to solve any technological problem, and should therefore be able to troubleshoot quickly and effectively, and be able to work under stressful circumstances and deadlines.
How to Become a Computer and Information System Manager
These professionals must possess at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited university in order to pursue a career as a computer and information system manager. Undergraduate majors could include computer science, information technology, management information systems, or a similarly related field. Many employers will also seek candidates that possess an advanced degree, like a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or a master's in a technology related field. Undergraduate coursework should include classes like computer engineering, mathematics, statistics, computer science and other related subjects. After completing the four-year bachelor's, some students can pursue a master's degree, which generally takes two additional years to complete. Graduate coursework should include database management, electronic business, finance, systems management and design, as well as other business or management related classes. Also, while certification is not required for employment, becoming certified in specific products can increase one's employment opportunities as it demonstrates one's expertise in the field. Licenses are not required for this profession.

Also, as technology continues to grow and change, more information technology (IT) professionals will be hired to keep companies competitive, and subsequently more computer and information systems managers will also be required to head these departments. The industries that are expected to see the greatest growth include computer system design companies, software publishing companies, data hosting corporations, consulting firms, healthcare organizations, and other similar companies. Other large employers of these professionals include insurance and financial firms, government agencies, manufacturing corporations, and business management organizations. While the annual salary for these professionals will vary according to geographic location, employer, and experience level, employees can expect to earn around $112,000 a year, according to BLS. Also, professionals at this managerial level could even expect to see additional bonuses, stock options, and increased benefits.
