What an Architect Does

All of the buildings in your community and around the world for businesses, industry and residential living were designed by architects. Architects are responsible for designing and planning everything from single family homes to entire airport terminals. Architects often work to ensure that their buildings make the best use of their setting, lighting and materials to create a certain aesthetic. Of course, looks aren't all that matter when it comes to architecture and buildings must also have a good flow and layout as well if they are to be functional and useable by their residents. Architects work with clients to figure out what they want to build. The architect then works to create drawings and prototypes for the client to view. If these ideas are accepted, the architect will draw up final plans using paper or, more likely, computer aided design software. Architects spend most of their time working in offices but may visit a building site to check on the progress of a project.

How to Become an Architect

The first step to becoming an architect is getting a degree in architecture. These programs, offered through colleges and universities, will teach students the fundamentals of good design and engineering practices. Throughout the years of their study, architects will take courses in art history, design, math and science. In addition to these in class requirements, most students will also need to complete an internship in order to graduate. While a bachelor's degree can be enough for some professionals, a master's or a longer degree program in architecture may be required for others. After graduation, architects will need to pass a licensing exam in order to work independently. While the bulk of the material will have been learned in college, some licensing boards also require two to three years of experience on the job to get licensed. Once licensing is complete, architects may start their own firms or work for larger organizations.

Career Outlook for Architects

As of 2008, architects held about 141,000 jobs nationwide. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that this number will increase in the coming years, opening up new opportunities for those just entering this field. Most jobs for architects are found in small architecture firms but about one in five architects is self-employed. Because of this, it can be a good idea to take a few courses in business and marketing to prepare for independent business ownership. Other jobs for architects are found in construction and government agencies. Architects will find jobs but there will often be keen competition for the best positions and those with additional training, experience and education will have the best opportunities. The greatest number of jobs for architects will be in places where the construction of new homes and businesses has not slowed due to the economic downturn.
