What an Animator Does

Animators are responsible for creating special effects, animation or other visual images that are used in film, video, computers and other electronic media. They work with a wide range of computer programs, technologies and film techniques to develop this imagery. Their work can be found in film, television shows, on the web and in computer games. Animators will often first work to develop characters and a storyboard the reflect the story or idea they want to convey. Once they've come up with a concept they or their clients like, they'll start developing the animations by hand or more likely, using computer technology. Animators must have an in-depth knowledge of the latest technology if they are to work in special effects or on creating high level digital animations. They must also have good skills in communication, teamwork and time management if they are to be successful int their field.

How to Become an Animator

To become an animator, you'll need to pursue a degree in animation from an accredited university or college. These degree programs will teach students how to work with a variety of different types of animation from the old school to the cutting edge. Students will learn how to create basic animations as well as design special effects, multimedia presentations and more. These programs usually take about four years to complete and students should graduate with a BA or a BFA. A bachelor's degree is usually appropriate training for those who want to go into animation but many will find that taking on internships can be a big help not only in finding work after graduation but in improving their skills during their education. Entry level work for animators often involves taking on only a small part of an animation project and eventually working their way up to character design and greater responsibility.

Career Outlook for Animators

From the biggest summer blockbusters to animated childen's television programs and short films on websites, the work of animators is all around us. As special effects and multimedia become more and more a part of everyday culture, the demand for qualified and professional animators is growing. Those entering this field can expect to meet job growth that is average to above average in the coming years, with steady growth of about 14 to 26 percent in jobs for newcomers and experienced pros. Of course, like most creative fields, animation is highly competitive. The top jobs with production companies and animation studios will have hundreds of qualified applicants, making it essential that individuals interested in career advancement hone their resumes and portfolios as much as possible. Animators may work long hours but they can be paid well, with the average salary being around $58,000. Those who are at the top of their field may make $90,000 or more.
