Online secondary math education degrees prepare students to become math teachers in middle schools and high schools. Students in these degree programs will take roughly an equal number of math and education courses.
Students in online secondary math education degree programs will take several hours of upper-level math courses, such as multivariate calculus, abstract algebra, math history, differential equations, number theory, computing science, and statistics. Students will also take a variety of education courses in classroom management, educational psychology, gifted and talented students, and teaching math. While students who teach secondary math won’t be teaching courses as advanced as what they take in college, it is important for them to fully grasp advanced mathematical concepts so that they can best explain them to students.
The ultimate goal of many secondary math education degree programs is to prepare students to become not only high-quality, effective teachers, but also state-certified teachers. State certification requirements vary by state, but in general will include passing tests that prove expertise in mathematics and understanding of best teaching practices. States will typically also require a certain number of student teaching and observation hours. While some online programs allow for completion of some fieldwork hours virtually, students will have to complete parts of their online education programs in-person. Because certification varies by state, and many provide certifications for the state in which they are located, it is in a student’s best interest to understand what their state’s requirements are and determine if they should complete their online degree program in-state.
For secondary math education graduates, career options abound beyond the classroom and beyond education. Graduates with teaching experience can become math department leaders within their school or math curriculum coordinators within their district. They could also seek jobs in management, data analysis, or economics.
