Online computer support degrees are a good choice for students who are not only proficient with computers, but who believe they have what it takes to help other people overcome technical difficulties. An online degree in computer support will equip students with skills in assisting other people with problems related to software, hardware, web development and design, and basic help desk functions and troubleshooting.
While online computer support degrees share some similar course work to programs in information technology (IT) or computer science, computer support is primarily offered at the associate degree level. Computer support does not explore theory of computation, advanced programming, and algorithms like computer science does, and computer support does not emphasize management of IT departments like IT does. Rather, computer support is a vocational degree that trains students for support specialist jobs.
Course work in a computer support degree program will include training in network administration, information systems, and end-user support principles. Students also learn how to provide excellent customer service, how to observe principles of professional etiquette, and how to communicate technical information effectively. Students must be able to effectively explain basic tasks to end-users, such as how to install and configure software and upgrades; or install, uninstall, and modify operating system software.
While education requirements may vary, graduates of online computer support degree programs may pursue careers as desktop support technicians, technical support analysts, help-desk workers and field support specialists, and systems support technicians. These professionals may be responsible for performing network maintenance, or answering phones and providing solutions to problems that users of software programs are experiencing.
