Computer science is one of today’s top majors, according to the Princeton Review. This is fueled by new technological innovations within areas like cloud computing and mobile application development, which has driven up the demand for skilled scientists. Additionally, many computer science jobs are seeing significant growth due to businesses and organizations coming to increasingly rely on technology to advertise their services.
Careers in computer science may also bring in a high salary, which makes the field a popular area of study for undergraduates and graduates alike. In fact, in the 2009-2010 school year alone, 128,318 bachelor’s degrees, 57,299 master’s degrees, and 9,370 doctoral degrees were awarded in the field of computer science, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that professionals earned a median pay of about $100,660 annually with a doctoral degree in 2010.
However, the computer scientist job outlook is not limited to doctoral researchers within the field. In fact, software developers and computer systems administrators careers are also experiencing fast growth and high salaries. Keep in mind, however, that salaries for computer science can vary depending upon a candidate’s experience and location.
