California has one of the largest economies in the world, totaling about $1.9 trillion in gross state product in 2009

California has one of the largest economies in the world, totaling about $1.9 trillion in gross state product in 2009. According to a report by the California Legislative Analyst's Office, trade, transportation and utilities, government, education, and professional and business services are the biggest industries in California. A few of the state's largest employers are the University of California, Cisco, and Los Angeles County. California is also home to some of the largest and most powerful companies in the world, including Google, Facebook, Chevron, Apple, and Hewlett-Packard.

One of the best ways to get your foot in the door with these industries or work for the state's top employers is to earn a college degree from an accredited college or university. The requirements for employment vary by employers and industries, but most require at least a bachelor's degree. Both of the University of California and California State University systems have continuing education divisions that offer various online courses, degree programs, and professional certificates to students living in and outside of California. For example, University of California-Davis offers 13 professional certificate programs that are as broad as project management and business analysis and as specific as winemaking and equine event management.

There are many well-known national online colleges and universities in California, such as Argosy University, ITT Technical Institute, University of Phoenix, and Westwood College. These private for-profit schools have a strong presence in California and have many campuses located across the state, offering various associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctor's degrees. Students can also find smaller online colleges in California, such as Heald College, which has campuses primarily in California and a few in Oregon and Hawaii.
