Careers in business are the fastest growing and most in-demand of all careers, which is reflected in the popularity of business education. The number of bachelor’s-level business degrees conferred has increased each year since 1999, with 358,000 degrees awarded in the 2009-2010 school year alone, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The endurance of business education can be boiled down to the fact that it is one of the most flexible disciplines available, as business skills – such as management and finance – has a place in nearly every industry. This may increase opportunity for employment and offer room for advancement within business careers.
Business jobs can be labeled in three primary categories: financial, management, and marketing. Within each of these categories, there are specific careers in business that are expected to accelerate in growth over the next decade. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), these include jobs such as human resources management, accounting and auditing, and market research analysts.
Because many business careers require the same skillsets, any of the jobs listed above can typically lead to each other, though some additional training, experience, or education may be required for a smoother transition. For example, it is not uncommon for human resources managers to seek employment as accountants, and even auditors can apply for market research analyst positions. The transferable nature of these jobs ensures that any person pursuing a career in business has a number of options for their future employment, which translates into job security.
