Open Access and OER

Here’s a discussion not to miss: Terra Incognita is hosting SPARC’s Gavin Baker discussing the linkages between open access publishing and open educational resources. More about him:

Gavin Baker is an IT and public policy consultant. Currently he is developing a student outreach campaign for SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, on the subject of open access to academic journal literature. Gavin also serves on the board of directors for FreeCulture.org, which is an international student organization that promotes the public interest in intellectual property and information & communications technology policy.

I’ll definitely be tuning in for this one.

Is education a basic human right? Yes, of course it is. The real question is, is it beneficial to make education freely accessible to all? In other words, do away with school fees/university fees and give courses and lectures for free. I believe yes, libraries have had the right idea for centuries. If we take a look at global issues such as crime, terrorism, global warming, teen pregnancy, poverty (this list could continue forever), it all stems from a lack of education or a limited, bias education (maybe even a carefuly manipulated & restricted education).

Being South Africa and working with people who have previously been deprived of education because of their race or gender, I see it everyday.

I see people living in poverty because they don’t have the right qualifications or knowledge to successfully secure employment. These people turn to crime. In return they’re ridiculed against and further deprived of funding and support. Our project Township Love offers free entrepreneurial workshops to people in the township. The aim of the project is to encourage networking between these individuals to work on entrepreneurial products that will create sustainability for themselves as well as their communities. We encourage positive thought and entrepreneurial spirit; employment is not the only option, creation of innovative businesses offers another.
