Does Checking Email Detract from Creative Thinking?

Marc Brownstein at Advertising Age writes about the perils of being tied to one’s email inbox and gives some helpful tips for rescuing yourself from its gravitational pull in his Please Step Away From the In-Box: How Writing and Reading E-mail Detracts From Thinking. He suggests:

  • Resist the urge.
  • Tell your staff and train your clients not to reply to all unless it is absolutely necessary.
  • Check e-mail waiting for the elevator.
  • Let people know that you won’t respond immediately to their e-mails.
  • No reading/replying in meetings.
  • Don’t look at your computer screen when someone is talking to you.
