There are a number of conflicting statements and assumptions made is this article.
2 of the 5 ways suggest talking with and listening to your users. If this is done you may find that social media is in fact a low priority – low enough to question why one would be selling it.
A recent local survey instrument used at the university library in which I work found this to be true. Undergrads were interested in the physical plant [more tables and chairs, group study rooms, later hours,...] Grad students were interested in more resources and research support. Neither were that interested in social media. It is a low priority for them and consequently it is a low priority for us.
Maybe the question should be why are we selling social media, or should we be “selling” something rather than asking what is needed and wanted and then aiming to fill needs based on user priorities, not what is shiny, inexpensive, and easier to implement.
