Libraries Using Facebook Flyers
Steve Lawson the Humanities Liaison Librarian for Tutt Library at Colorado College has created this innovative, albeit slightly creepy Facebook Flyer for his library announcing their new late hours. It won’t be soon forgotten by those who see it, that’s for sure. What a great way to get the word out about library hours, workshops, and events than placing an ad where students are sure to see it on Facebook? Facebook allows you to target who sees your flyer according to network, age, or gender, and they’re pretty affordable at $10 for 5,000. Know of any other libraries using Facebook Flyers? Please share about them in the comments!

We have been using them at Carnegie Mellon for over a year now. This method of advertising succeeds for the exact reason you stated-the information is placed where the students already look. Our use has been mainly to announce upcoming events and lectures, but further applications may arise.

We ran two Facebook Flyers in April at Muskingum College to promote extended hours during finals week and to remind students to return library materials. Both flyers linked back to blog posts so we could track click-throughs. I would say it was mildly successful. We didn’t get a lot of hits to the blog posts. A couple of people mentioned seeing the flyers. I view it as a very inexpensive experiment and we will probably do it again in December.
I have screen captures of both flyers on Flickr.

What a great idea! I’m going to steal it for the public library.

I’m in the process of designing one for our virtual reference services (at Temple U in Philly).
